If you look at the runways at London Fashion Week this season compared to decades ago, the faces you see walking down them are quite different. Models of different ages, races, gender identities, body types, and hair textures routinely share the same runway today, making one thing clear: London fashion shouldn’t be defined by one look.
For years, certain faces have become synonymous with London’s fashion scene. Twiggy’s androgynous frame. Kate Moss’s waifish, heroin-chic silhouette. Naomi Campbell’s statuesque presence. Each model was different, yet all became part of a broader visual language intertwined with the London fashion scene. Their respective looks were so recognizable that they, in some ways, became shorthand for the city itself.
